Tips for boosting worker recruitment and retention

The Associated Builders and Contractors report an estimated 546,000 additional workers are needed on top of the normal pace for hiring to meet demand for construction labor in 2023, according to Construction Executive.

As older construction workers retire, the industry has had a difficult time attracting workers. However, construction leaders who have invested in robust safety and wellness programs have seen significant shifts in worker satisfaction and retention.

Construction Executive shares the following three key components focusing on worker well-being that can help companies recruit and retain workers.

  1. Safety and prevention. Workers want to know leaders care about their safety, so continuous improvement of safety and injury prevention is key. New personal protective equipment or technology that improves safety shows workers you are taking steps to keep them safe. You also can focus on prevention by bringing professionals such as occupational health nurses onto the worksite to help workers perform more efficiently and improve morale.
  2. Access to quality health and wellness resources. Wellness programs that offer education and support for health—such as nutrition counseling or ergonomics assessments—keep workers engaged in their personal health and create a culture of care for the well-being of all. Consider bringing a wellness cart onsite during the day to remind workers about the importance of hydration and adequate sleep and allow them to check in with providers regarding their mental and physical health.
  3. Environmental wellness. Workers are more motivated to come to work when the environment is welcoming and leaders consider their well-being. Some companies offer clean hygiene amenities, healthy food options, hydration stations and preventive health screenings. Providing even minor upgrades or perks can show current and prospective workers that leaders want to meet the demands of the modern workforce.

Showing you care about workers’ well-being will help you build strong relationships and trust with your employees, which will make them want to stick around and help you attract new talent.
